Architecture
Two examples of the structural complexity of the castle:
The inner castle courtyard: The Gothic frescoes on the low cross vault of St. George's Chapel are striking here. An open arcade (Renaissance) connects the Fürstenbau with the Schachnerbau. This magnificent hall building (1499) houses the partly wood-panelled Knights' Hall.
The observation tower: Inside the 18th century observation tower, a steel staircase winds its way up through a state-of-the-art multimedia exhibit.
History
Built in 1219 on the Georgsberg, the castle offered protection to the prince-bishops for almost 600 years. At the same time, it demonstrated their power and strength. During the Renaissance, the fortress was expanded into a "castle". Fortifications were built in the 17th century. Napoleon Bonaparte used the Oberhaus as a border bastion in the war against Austria. From 1822, the Veste served the Bavarian army as a military penal institution. In 1932, the city of Passau took over the castle grounds and established a museum.
Nearby
Public observatory: There is an observatory on the new rampart of the castle complex. Every Wednesday evening, in clear weather, you can look at the stars together with experienced amateur astronomers.
Hiking trails: Around the Veste Oberhaus it is possible to hike wonderfully, whether on long-distance hiking trails or local routes. The Goldsteig trail, for example, leads to the district of Hals with its medieval market centre and castle ruins.
